joanna + brenden | intimate cottage wedding in the rain

Joanna inquired about her wedding in Blue Sea, Quebec, not knowing that I'd be just a few minutes down the road at our family cottage. Since we only go up to Ryan's parents' place on Lac Long a few times a year, I knew it was meant to be.

While we ran through the rain on our way back from doing some bride and groom photos, Joanna said to me, "I think I know what your next blog post will be!" She was right. So here you go, friends -- a how-to post for getting married in the rain with grace.

Joanna's effortless beauty made her stress free about the rain. These curls looked gorgeous all day, even though they got wet!

And the flowers were thanking us the whole time...

Although the ceremony was supposed to happen in the backyard, the living room was a perfect plan B.

A few family photo on the covered portion of the deck. When it comes to family photos, umbrellas aren't ideal so we will use any space we have to make it work outside!

Joanna & Brenden held these adorable clear umbrellas and let me spend as much time in the rain as I liked. I am so thankful that Joanna prioritized beautiful photos over keeping the bottom of her dress dry!

And look how gorgeous our portrait session ended up being! We did all of these within 20 minutes.

One of my favourites!

(And how it was taken! Ha! A little behind the scenes for ya.)

When you don't have sunshine, a few strands of edison bulbs will brighten up the background, and turn the boring old rain into a magical place for photos.

"There's more deck around back!" I was not disappointed.

Friends. This is the part where I tell you that Joanna & Brenden are expecting a little bundle in only 4 short months! Seriously the best news and they are so excited!

It's critical that you know about Joanna's pregnancy before this next part. So prepare for your heart to explode, because this was no ordinary wedding cake!

Joanna & Brenden saved an AMAZING surprise for this very moment. In front of their families, they sliced into the delicate cake and pulled out a slice that would be decorated with either pink or blue layers. That's right! This was a gender reveal wedding cake! And not a single person knew what that cake would hold.

A boy! Blue icing and fresh blueberries between layers of white cake. The room erupted with celebrations and tears! It was one of my favourite wedding day memories ever.

The happiest moment there's ever been.

They managed to keep it together when they said their vows. They were beaming as they walked down the aisle. But when they found out their first baby would be a boy, they couldn't contain their joy. It was an honour to join these lovely families and capture such a happy moment in their lives.

Joanna & Brenden -- thank you so much for welcoming me to the family cottage for this beautiful event! It's so special to witness a marriage with such a small group, and the moment you found out you were having a boy will forever be a highlight! Have the most magical time on your exotic honeymoon <3
