the work is never done

Someone shared this sentiment with me over coffee last week:

"Your to-do list will never be empty. Embrace it."

Her words washed over me without being soaked in. It reminded me of the popular saying, "life is a journey, not a destination." It's a cliché. By nature it's the kind of thing that doesn't really make you stop in your tracks as if this were new information.

Of course the to-do list won't ever be empty. The work is never done.

Days later it felt like something slapped me inside my brain, saying "ENJOY! Simply enjoy!" I went back and thought about what my friend and said. There's nothing waiting for you at the end of a list of completed tasks except for another list of tasks that need completing. And that's the good stuff. Chug away at your life and find as much happiness in it as you possibly can. Don't wait for your vacation to start sight seeing. Don't wait for the right time to do the scary thing you know you HAVE to do. Don't wait for your weekend to start relaxing. Don't wait for your home decor to be "finished," because finished doesn't exist.

Keep working at it. Keep enjoying.

I think doing both of those things at the same time is the true meaning of balance.

nikki + steve | rideau hall engagement session

I asked her to walk towards me with a cute and bouncy stride. I was not prepared for how good she would be at it. When I asked Nikki if she had ever modelled before, she had the best answer:

"Not at all. But I've watched 22 cycles of America's Next Top Model."

Oh, okay. So she's basically been preparing for this moment with every episode of Tyra. Got it.

I sat down with Nikki and Steve a few months ago to chat about the art gallery wedding they're planning for the end of the year. It will be an intimate event with organic florals, amazing food, and a relaxed feel. It's sure to be a beautiful event and I'm counting down the days. For now, enjoy a few faves from Nikki & Steve's sunny engagement session at Rideau Hall!

Steve is one of the creators of Dog & Pony Brewlab. I happen to think that's the coolest thing ever...

Is it December yet?! I can't wait for this one :)

michelle + tyler | horse farm engagement session

At the end of a winding country road, a stone house basks in the fall sunshine. A cool breeze blows down the driveway as the animals come to greet you one by one, followed by the most beautiful girl who welcomes you to her home and offers up a hug right away. It was the perfect place for a photo shoot.

Michelle is such a doll. She invited me to photograph her October 8th wedding about a year ago. Imagine my surprise when she informed me that she and Tyler were expecting a baby around the end of November! The wedding date has changed and one teeny tiny little guest has been added, but everything else has stayed the same. I can't wait to celebrate with them next June!

An engagement session, a maternity session -- this shoot is a little something in between <3
